CLIENT STORY: CHRISTIAN GIDEON
Christian Gideon has become a worldwide photography phenomenon. In the midst of a thriving career at AT&T, he decided to make the jump to a career in his long time interest in photography. Within a few short months Christian was already making waves by making Instagram’s suggested users list and just two years working as a photographer full-time, Christian became a go-to around the nation for wedding photography. He continues working as a wedding and portrait photographer but also shoots for companies like Heineken and Soccer Bible. Now based in Springfield, Missouri, we talked to him about the highs, lows, and everything in-between when building a thriving business in the Midwest.
H/H: FIRST THINGS FIRST. YOU’RE NOT JUST A BUSINESS OWNER, BUT A DAD OF TWO BOYS. HOW DO YOU BALANCE BUSINESS WITH FATHERHOOD?
Christian Gideon: Communication is huge. Letting my boys know where I’m at, what I’m working on, and that they both mean the world to me is key. Also Facetime is a lifesaver for us.
WHAT DID THE BEGINNING OF STARTING A PHOTOGRAPHY BUSINESS IN SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI LOOK LIKE?
It was full of bumps and figuring out where I wanted to take things. Ultimately it was putting one foot in front of the other – constantly growing and expanding. It’s been a long, slow, process but I’ve enjoyed that journey so much.
WERE THERE POSITIVES OR NEGATIVES TO STARTING HERE, AS OPPOSED TO LARGER METROPOLITAN AREAS LIKE NEW YORK CITY OR LOS ANGELES?
Positives all around. I learned early that I’m only as good as the people I work with. My clients have always been instrumental in my growth. Word of mouth has allowed me to grow exponentially. NYC and LA are full of people that only want to know what you can do for them. The Midwest is full of people that want to help you succeed.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME BIG HIGHLIGHT MOMENTS FOR YOU PERSONALLY?
Photographing the Real Madrid and Barcelona soccer match this summer in Miami – two of the biggest soccer teams in the world. 15 year old me would have been so proud.
WHAT DO YOU ACCOUNT YOUR SUCCESS TO?
Community. Family, friends, and clients that believed in me and pushed me to chase my dreams.
YOU WERE ALSO CONNECTED WITH HUDSON / HAWK PRETTY EARLY ON – ALMOST FROM ITS INCEPTION. WHAT WAS THAT EXPERIENCE LIKE?
Amazing honestly. The people there always were up for chatting about our shared vision in bringing something amazing to Springfield. They were such motivation to bring excellence in everything you produce. I’ve also met some of my best friends in the shop over the years.
YOU TRAVEL QUITE A BIT AND ARE VERY MOBILE. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LINEUP OF HAIR PRODUCTS FOR YOUR LIFESTYLE?
I’ve been using Byrd Products lately and loving them. Always stays on me whenever I travel. When you’re shooting in NYC first impressions are huge so I always try to show up looking fresh.
